Department of Journalism and Communication held conference on big data

The Department of Journalism and Communication has organized the Big Data-Driven Communication Conference on January 22, 2019, in the Jockey Club Multimedia Production Centre of Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU), to cultivate students with the latest trend of developments in the communication industry.

The conference was divided into two sessions. In the morning session, the Honorary Guest Speaker, Mr. Mohamed Din BUTT, Executive Director, Hong Kong Productivity Council, chose the topic “Smart City Achievements and Progress in Hong Kong and the Road Ahead” to address the students.

The conference was then followed by three keynote speakers providing perspectives on the following topics:

-“Big Data and Artificial Intelligence for Learning and Wellbeing”, by Dr. Helen MENG, Professor, Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, the Chinese University of Hong Kong;

-“Smart Data Analytics in the Manufacturing Industry”, by Dr. Benny DRESCHER, Business Development Asia-Pacific, INC Invention Center Aachen;

-“Technology Driven Market Transition Trends”, by Dr. Charleston SIN, Executive Director, MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node.

Afternoon session

The afternoon session was divided into two panels. The theme of the first panel was Big-Data Driven Communication Scholarship & Challenges in Education. The areas covered by the three speakers including:

-Dr. Angus W.H. CHEONG, Chair of Asia Pacific Internet Research Alliance (APIPA), Founder and CEO of e-Research & Solutions (Macao), Chief Consultant of uMax Data Technology Limited (Hong Kong): “A new approach to big data mining: Using data-technology-assisted content analysis method”;

-Dr. King-wa FU, Associate Professor, Journalism and Media Studies Centre, Hong Kong University: “WeChatscope: a ‘big data’ approach to understanding China’s social media”;

-Mr. Bernard SUEN, Center for Entrepreneurship, Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Management, Faculty of Business Administration, the Chinese University of Hong Kong: “Design and Data, Story and System: Computational Design Thinking as the Basis of Digital and Media Literacy for 21st Century Talents”.

The theme of the second panel was The Power of Big-Data in Media Industry. The speakers and their topics were:

-Mr. Arthur CHAN, Chief Operating Officer, APAC, Vpon Big Data Group: “Maximizing Business Performance by Big Data Application”;

-Miss Cheyenne LAW, Project Director, Ogilvy Shanghai: “How Data Builds Brand Loyalty?”.

Professor Louis LEUNG, member of the Conference Organizing Committee, said, today, technology and techniques in data analytics, data mining, machine learning, semantic analysis, data visualization, and big data research had been gradually dominating the communication industry, and hence increasingly influential to production, dissemination of information and relevant human behaviors.

“HKSYU and the Department of Journalism and Communication are committed to cultivate students with the latest trend of development in the communication industry, and those who seek to cultivate a career in a fast-moving communication industry in Hong Kong. This conference gathers together a group of experts for one-day presentations and discussions aiming at stimulating thoughts and ideas on how big data was impacting communication education especially in data-driven journalism, media/consumer research, and different perspectives the opportunities and challenges big data bring to the media industry.” Professor LEUNG said.

There were around 600 students and colleagues from across campus attended the conference.
