15-01-2015

On 20th of November, 2014, at the 40th Graduation Ceremony of Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU), degrees were awarded to the first cohorts of students from the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies, Master of Social Sciences (Transformation of Chinese Societies) and the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology, and to the third cohort of students from the Master of Social Sciences in Counselling Psychology.

The Master’s degrees were conferred by Professor HU Yao-Su, member of the Board of Governors of HKSYU.

There were seven graduates from the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies, eight from the Master of Social Sciences (Transformation of Chinese Societies), twenty-one from the Master of Social Sciences in Counselling Psychology, and six from the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology.

Ms. CHAN Po King, one of the graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology, held a Bachelor of Public Administration and a Master’s degree in Corporate Finance. She has long been engaging in financial-related and management work. After giving birth to a baby boy, she wanted to deepen her understanding of child psychology and strengthen her communication skills with children. So, she decided to enroll in a postgraduate psychology programme.

Ms. CHAN mentioned that in the past, the most important thing in her life was to earn money to support her family, but her true interest lay in in psychology. She compared different postgraduate programmes in local universities and found that HKSYU’s postgraduate diploma is designed for holders of non-psychology Bachelor’s degrees and that the courses offered were comparable to those in similar programmes.

Ms. CHAN said one of the difficulties in studying was time allocation – it was a challenge for her to balance her time between family and university; and for her classmates with full-time jobs, it was an even greater challenge.

Regarding her plan for after graduation, she said she would devote more time to taking care of her son, and might engage in a psychology-related profession in the future.

Ms. CHAN encouraged those who are interested in psychology to enroll in the programme. “When you are young and without any financial burden, seize the opportunity. When you decide to pursue study in this field, you should be totally committed, and not give up.”

The graduation ceremony of the MBA programme was held on 21st of November. The University of Louisiana at Monroe (USA) has offered the MBA programme at Hong Kong Shue Yan University since 1979. Dr. Donna LUSE, Associate Dean of the College of Business and Social Sciences of the University of Louisiana at Monroe, conferred the degree upon two graduates.
