HKSYU offers first Doctoral programme in Counselling Psychology

Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) is going to offer a Doctor of Psychology in Counselling Psychology (PsyD-CoP) programme in September 2015. This is not only the first doctoral programme offered by HKSYU, but also the first Doctor of Psychology in Counselling Psychology programme in Hong Kong as well as in Asia.

“We started to plan the doctoral programme in 2004 in order to cater for the learning and developmental needs of graduates from the Counselling and Psychology Department as well as Hong Kong society as a whole,” Professor Catherine Sun, Head of Department of Counselling & Psychology of HKSYU said.

Professor Sun cited the “Occupy Central” political movement as an example, pointing out that some Hongkongers may be facing mood fluctuations during the movement and they need counselling.

Professor Sun admitted that there were lots of challenges and queries during the planning and preparation stage of the Bachelor programme as well as the Doctoral programme. “What we do is try our best, do our best, and let the results speak for themselves,” she said.

Professor Sun emphasized the counselling programme at HKSYU was first initiated by the late Dr. Chung Chi Yung, founder of the University, in 1976. In 1977, the Diploma Programme in Counselling & Guidance was established and began to admit students. She believed that the launching of the PsyD-CoP programme could further strengthen the status of HKSYU in counselling psychology education in Hong Kong.

The PsyD-CoP programme offered by HKSYU is the first Doctoral programme in Counselling Psychology in Hong Kong as well as in Asia. “We welcome more institutions to operate similar programs. Coopetition will benefit the development of counselling psychology in Hong Kong in the long run,” Professor Sun said.

According to Professor Sun, the mode of attendance of the programme is a three-year part-time programme. The intake quota per annum is six.

“The course content is tailor-made for every student. Students are available to choose the fields that they are interested in counselling psychology according to their interest and future career path,” Professor Sun said.

She added that students should indicate their choice to the department in their applications so as to better match student interests with expertise within the department.

The programme has been validated by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ). It will start in September 2015, after the approval by the Chief Executive in Council in March 2015.

Application methods and tuition fees will be confirmed in early March 2015. For more information, please contact: Department of Counselling and Psychology at 2806 5123 or counpsy@hksyu.edu.
