SYU signs MOU with National Taipei University

Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) and the National Taipei University (NTPU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Academic Exchange on 9 November. This is the most comprehensive academic cooperation agreement signed by Shue Yan with another university in that the MOU covers seven areas of cooperation ranging from the exchange of students to the development of joint degree programmes. The first academic activity generated under the MOU is a summer study programme scheduled to take place in summer 2013.

The MOU signing ceremony was held in the Exhibition Hall of the Main Academic Building of HKSYU. The ceremony began with a speech of welcome by Dr. Henry Hu, President of HKSYU. Professor Fu-Jiing Shiue, President of NTPU, then gave a speech about the background and the purposes of the academic cooperation between the two universities.

“We appreciate that HKSYU has put great emphasis on learning outcomes and on whole-person education. That is exactly what NTPU has been doing.” Professor Fu-Jiing Shiue said.

The objective of the agreement is to strengthen mutual cooperation and to strive for the promotion of mutual exchanges between HKSYU and NTPU.

The seven areas of cooperation covered by the MOU are:

(1) Development of joint academic degree programmes;

(2) Exchange of students;

(3) Exchange of faculty;

(4) Joint research activities;

(5) Participation in seminars and conferences;

(6) Exchange of academic materials and other information; and

(7) Summer camp.

The first activity in the Exchange of Students area is a summer study programme to be held in the summer of 2013. An agreement to undertake the summer study programme was also signed at the ceremony.

Under the programme, 25 students from the Faculty of Commerce of HKSYU will go to Taipei to attend a two-week study programme provided by the College of Business and College of Law of NTPU. Based on the principle of reciprocity, a similar number of NTPU students will come to Hong Kong next summer to attend a summer study programme offered by HKSYU.

The summer study programme consists of lectures and field trips. The lectures cover four main areas, namely, management, finance, accounting and law, and aim to provide students with an understanding of the current situation in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Professor Shu Li Huang, Vice-President of NTPU, Professor Dalton Li, Dean of Academic Affairs of NTPU and other senior management staff of NTPU attended the signing ceremony.
